The stablecoin issuer Tether received a 500 BTC ($ 23 million) ransom demand. Otherwise, the attacker threatens to publish documents that could allegedly “harm the bitcoin ecosystem.” Company representatives stated:
“While we see this as a rather depressing attempt at blackmail, we are taking a responsible approach. We passed information about the fabricated contacts and the related ransom demand to law enforcement agencies. As always, we will fully support law enforcement in the investigation of this blackmail scheme. ”
At the same time, documents are being circulated on the Web, allegedly representing Tether’s correspondence with the Bahamian bank Deltec, which serves the company. They say that, contrary to their claims, Tether is using crypto assets to back up USDT. The company itself, in the comments under the evidence of the alleged leak, wrote that this was not so, and noted that they were trying to blackmail it. Tether CTO Paolo Ardoino said:
“Now the truth seekers around Tether are also trying to blackmail us. Commercial idea for next try: Request 21M bitcoins and a couple of pizzas. “
