The military base of the Turkish Armed Forces in northern Iraq was attacked by unmanned aerial vehicles filled with explosives for the first time, an Iraqi citizen working at the base was killed. This was reported on May 21 by the Shafaq agency.
“The Zelikan base in the province of Ninewa was attacked by drones with explosives. This is the first such attack,” an Iraqi security source told the agency.
According to him, an Iraqi citizen who worked at this military base died as a result of the attack.
To date, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
The Turkish Defense Ministry launched a military operation in April against militants of the banned PKK in the country, it is taking place in the northern part of Iraq. Special Forces and the Air Force are involved in the operation. The Office of the President of Iraq stated that the Turkish operation poses a threat to the national security of the country, and the head of the Turkish Foreign Ministry Mevlut Cavusoglu said that the Turkish side aims to ensure the security of its borders.
The armed conflict with the banned Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in Turkey began in 1984 and resumed in 2015. In northern Iraq, there are PKK bases against which the Turkish Armed Forces conduct air and ground operations. President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan previously announced the destruction of six thousand members of the PKK inside the country and 6.9 thousand outside it since July 2015, the losses of the Turkish security forces amounted to more than 1.2 thousand people.
