These five resorts are designed so that guests can spend time with the animals without leaving the territory.
Zambia and elephants strolling right through the hotel lobby
In Zambia, South Luangwa National Park is full of wild animals – these are giraffes, hippos, buffaloes, crocodiles. You will see many of them from the jeep during the safari. And you can admire them without leaving the Mfuwe Lodge. It is located on the banks of two reservoirs where animals come to drink.
The best months to visit this hotel are from October to December. During this time, families of wild elephants appear right in the hotel lobby almost every day. They walk past the front desk to pick up wild mango fruits nearby.
Andy Hogg, founder of safari firm Bushcamp, says: “During peak mango season, elephants come several times a day. They almost always come early in the morning – probably to collect the fruits that have fallen overnight. Then during the day other elephants come in, sometimes in groups – to see if there are any new mangoes. “
Elephants have been coming here since the 1990s, Hogg said. They should not be touched or photographed with a flash – it is better to observe them from a safe distance, for example, from behind a rack.
Norway and kisses with wolves
Most tourists travel to Norway to see the Northern Lights with their own eyes or take a cruise through the incredibly beautiful fjords. But some come because of the wolves.
In the Polar Park, located near the city of Narvik, wolves are bred in large enclosures. For tourists, they are taken out of the enclosure, accompanied by a guide and trainer, and they can be stroked. And especially the lucky ones they can even “kiss” by licking their faces.
Book your stay at Wolf Lodge, a modern country house with floor-to-ceiling windows built right inside the enclosure so you can sit by the fireplace and stare at them. In the presence of a guide, the wolf can even be allowed into the house.
Kenya and breakfast with giraffes
In Kenya, on the outskirts of Nairobi, on 12 acres of private land surrounded by 140 acres of forest, the Giraffe estate is located. In the 70s, the estate was owned by Jock and Betty Leslie-Melville, who advocated the conservation of the giraffe population, and bought land and a house for this purpose. In 1984 the estate became a hotel.
This is a special place: 14 giraffes visit the estate in the morning and during afternoon tea (around 4:00 pm). They greet guests and enjoy snacks.
In the morning, giraffes come to the windows of the house for breakfast. They stick their heads in the windows (including the second floor), eat special food from their hands (provided by the administration) and even lick visitors in the face. The same thing happens in the afternoon.
Giraffes roam freely around the hotel, and this is the only such place in the world.
Costa Rica and sloths in the rainforest
South and Central America is home to sloths, exotic mammals known for their slowness. They spend most of their time motionless in trees in tropical rain forests.
If you come on vacation to Costa Rica, in the small town of Las Fortuna, and stay at the Nayara resort, sloths can be seen right from the porch or from the window of the villa.
This luxurious resort is known for its shelter for sloths – here they grow the felled forest in which these animals have lived since ancient times.
Maldives and swimming with marine animals
The Maldives is famous for its pristine beaches, crystal clear sea and in-water bungalows, but you can also get up close and personal with sea animals.
Built around a coral reef in a marine reserve, guests at Milaidhoo often spot exotic birds on the terrace or spot dolphins, sea turtles or even nurse sharks right on the beach.
Huvafen Fushi Resort has an underwater spa with a night aquarium, where you can see a huge variety of fish, eels and sharks. And at One & Only Reethi Rah’s Tapasake, built on stilts over the ocean, underwater floodlights illuminate nursing sharks circling the water. Conrad Maldives opened its first underwater hotel in November – there is also an underwater restaurant with glass walls, where you can admire the life of marine life while sipping cocktails.
