“For the first time in eight years, Melitopol and Crimea are connected by passenger traffic. Now we can freely travel to the Crimea, the Russians can come to us. Communication with Crimea is very important for us, we have been waiting for many years for this to become possible. The message was resumed precisely because there was a very large request from the residents, ”the head of the military-civilian administration of Melitopol told TASS Galina Danilchenko.
After the referendum in Crimea in 2014, the Kyiv authorities cut off rail and road links to the peninsula. In mid-March 2022, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced that the Kherson region, bordering Crimea, was under the complete control of Russian troops. Also, Russian servicemen managed to liberate 70% of the Zaporozhye region, the administrative center of the region, the city of Zaporozhye, remains under the control of Kyiv, its function is temporarily performed by Melitopol. Since June 30, Russians have been allowed free entry to the Kherson and Zaporozhye regions: earlier, due to restrictions in force at the border, additional grounds were required for entry from the Russian Federation into the territory of the Kherson region or Zaporozhye, for example, the presence of relatives.
