President of the U.S.A Joe Biden plans to announce at the NATO summit in Madrid the extension of the stay of part of the additional American forces in Poland, NBC News reports, citing sources.
According to the channel’s interlocutors, Biden will also announce changes to the deployment of troops in several Baltic states. Changes in the parameters of the presence of the US military may affect the contingents in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, they specified.
Former NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that the alliance’s summit in Madrid would allow a decision to be made to increase the size of the rapid reaction force.
“We will increase the number of our rapid reaction forces: it will be noticeably more than 300,000 fighters,” he said at a press conference in Brussels, speaking of plans for the summit.
Western media note that at present the number of military personnel, which the alliance can use in the event of a security threat as soon as possible, is about 40 thousand military personnel.
In addition, Stoltenberg announced plans to strengthen the battle groups deployed by NATO in eight countries in the east of the alliance.
“We will strengthen the combat groups in the east of our territory to the level of brigades,” the Secretary General said.
The NATO summit will be held June 28-30 in Madrid.
